Context

Before the United Nations underlined the importance of women’s stance on peace building and conflicts resolution some decades ago, the role of women remained relegated. Women however occupy a fundamental position at every level of society and need avenues to showcase their potentials. Civil society, women organizations have been advocating for leaders to assess the place of women in peace and security and especially, increasing the voice of women on global issues.

The politico economic developments that marked the global world in recent years have reignited a new consciousness as to how to define a new world and reinvigorate global connectivity challenged by interconnected crises across the globe. Women need a significant scope to bring peace, stability and ensure global cooperation in today’s turbulent world.

Health hazards, especially COVID-19 with its adverse effects, political instability in Africa, climate change, geopolitical tensions, threats to multilateralism among others have changed narratives and brought about stagnation and great discrepancy among nations. With the uncertainties resulting from the crises in all dimensions, there is need to chart a recovery route to peace and stability.

Conversant with the changes occurring in the world, especially around politico economic lines, there is need to reboot international cooperation, which is vital to enforcing humanitarian aid, development cooperation and peace promotion. International cooperation also impacts geopolitical relations, security, international trade, geoeconomics, military and technical cooperation, as well as energy, scientific, cultural, and humanitarian exchanges, and foreign policy. In 2022, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres underlined the urgency for more effective and inclusive global cooperation to address contemporary or modern-day challenges. Thus, we cannot wait to give more consideration to women’ contribution in effecting global change and ensuring peace, security, and international cooperation.

Objectives

The prime objective of this event is to discuss and clarify the contribution of women to fostering international cooperation and building a more stable and more peaceful world. Through perspectives from different regions the webinar will:

  • Discuss the stakes of international cooperation
  • Analyze the place of women in ensuring peace and international cooperation
  • Ascertain the place of women in global issues

Points to discuss

The following questions will guide the discussions:

  1. What are the stakes of global cooperation in contemporary society?
  2. What proxemics exits between men and women in solving world’s problems or is gender disparity a setback to women in their peace-building efforts to ensure stability and development?
  3. How instrumental are women in reshaping world peace and cementing global cooperation threatened by the quest to create a new world order?
  4. Women are key stakeholders in accelerating sustainable peace and development. What avenues are available for them to take on this and how can they define a clear trajectory for the post transforming world?
  5. Bilateral and multilateral relations are strengthened through peace and global order. The world is divided today among politico economic compartments. Women are great facilitators and have proven their prowess in peace building. How can international bodies increase women’s participation in fostering agreements for global cooperation?
  6. In the African context, the quest by superpowers to carve their spheres of influe nce and increased multilateralism have brought divergence across the continent. What is the place of women in maximising the advantages of multilateralism and present-day quests?
